Three local row crop farmers will be showing their no-till and cover crop operations on July 11th from 9 am to noon. Look for signs and car caravan will follow. We will meet at the Larsen's farm 7604 14th St NW Byron, MN 55920, which is about 2 mile East of Byron and 5 miles West of Rochester. Martin Larsen is a no-till farmer and works for the Olmsted County SWCD. He will be describing his experiences in no-till and cover crops, and how he interseeding of cover crops into v6 corn both on his own farm and the SWCD plot. We will also be showcasing an eye opening slake test to show the benefits of soil structure and water infiltration. The next stop will be at Tom Pyfferoen's farm, and Tom will discuss the do's and dont's of beginning no-till. Making sure the planter is setup for no-till planting is vitally important, and Tom can walk us through the process. He will also discuss how he planted corn into green rye this year. Curt Tvedt will wrap up the day by showing us some of the experiments he is trying out on his farm to improve his soil health. We will examine his planting of soybeans that he seeded into 4-5 foot tall rye and then rolled 7 days later!

If you are still hungry for more discussion, you can join us after the field day for lunch at the Bears Den in Byron, MN. Please RSVP by July 9th to Shona Snater at 507-523-3366 or by email at ssnater@landstewardshipproject.org
