Farmers Take to the Air In a New Concept of Aerial Seeding Winter Rye
August 30, 2005
Five farmers in the Zumbro Watershed were part of a Minnesota Department of Agriculture demonstration project. Also
involved in this demonstration project were the BALMM (Basin Alliance of the Lower Mississippi in Minnesota), cover crop
strategy team and the Whitewater Watershed Project. Winter rye was seeded at a rate of 50 lbs. per acre by a
helicopter in standing crops of field corn, soybeans and sweet corn. The goal of this demonstration project was to see if
a cover crop could be established before the crops were harvested. The participating farmers were optimistic about the
program and seeded 430 acres. Some farmers were using this new seeding method to get an early start on their cover
crop planting, some 2-6 weeks earlier than normal. While other farmers were planning on grazing the winter rye
growing on these fields, after they harvested their field corn and soybeans.
